The Flex Show Part 2

360 Flex

So, it’s official: I’m going to be speaking at 360 Flex in September/October. The speaker list went up on the site today!

I’m going to be talking about something I’ve had rattling around in my head for a while: Navigation and “power user” features in RIAs, specifically Flex RIAs. They way I use my computer is not the way I can use my RIAs, and I don’t like that. I use things like QuickSilver, and Firefox Mouse Gestures, and the command line (<3 bash) and I want that experience in my RIAs too.

The talk basically asks: How do you start introducing “power user” features into your Flex Apps, and how do you start to educate the general user about the productivity gains they’ll get by making use of these types of features?

I’m really excited about being able to do this talk. Plus, it means I get to go to 360 Flex. Good times.

Flex is now Open Source!

Crazy days, my friends. Something bugging you about Flex? Well, stop whining and submit a patch!

Adobe announced today that they’re open sourcing Flex under the MPL. Read more on labs and at James Ward’s Blog. Join the Google Code Group.

It looks like it will be summer before the code starts to open up, and probably the end of the year before we can submit code, but this is great news. It’s the right thing to do, though. Tap in to the community, and get the community to understand how to best use the tool the best way possible, by letting them see first hand how it works.

Sandimas project in public beta

One of the announcements I’m behind on is that the eBay desktop app, codenamed San Dimas is ready for public beta. Check it out. Comment on the blog.

Apollo’s update framework is pretty sweet, so as we release changes you can quickly get the new version with pretty much no effort. We’re looking at adding bug reporting now, so we can make sure that we get the right feedback from users. Changing the face of eBay. Good Times.
